The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts, covering Kindergarten through Grade 6, are fully viewable within Montessori Compass. Standards are presented in an intuitive, searchable format. Simply click on a specific standard to display all measurable learning objectives (known as elements) from the Montessori Scope & Sequence that align with it.

For example, in the illustration to the right, a Kindergarten Language standard for Vocabulary Acquisition & Use is shown. More than 30 Montessori elements have been mapped to this standard. Whenever one of these 30 elements is documented for a student, the corresponding Common Core standard is automatically recorded as well.

This precise mapping is made possible because each Montessori lesson is tied to clearly defined, measurable learning objectives. These objectives provide the foundation for accurate and meaningful alignment with the Common Core.

It’s important to note that while every Common Core standard is met through the Montessori Scope & Sequence, the reverse is not true. Many of the rich, developmentally appropriate learning experiences defined in Montessori are not represented within the Common Core framework.
